About

Hello! My name is Rebecca Holland and I’m a reporter on the Metro desk at The Advocate in Baton Rouge, La. I write about rural parishes, mental health, policing and more.

In a past life, I freelanced for years for publications including The Guardian, The Washington Post, The National, Food & Wine, and more.  You can find some recent work here.

I used to write a Chicago column for Architectural Digest, and wrote the MOON Guidebook to Chicago.

A few years ago, I grew frustrated with travel media and listicles and started Curiosity Magazine, a now defunct magazine that featured deep dive stories and encouraged readers to learn a little more about the places they might travel.

Some extra background:

I grew up in a tiny town in Wisconsin and went to University of Wisconsin–Madison, where I majored in Journalism and Languages & Cultures of Asia. A decade later, I went back to school to get my Masters at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, with a focus on Social Justice & Investigative Journalism.

Prior to journalism, I worked in communications for a healthcare NGO and for a legal aid organization.  I’ve also spent years my life working in restaurants, which is incredibly fun and challenging and educational and something I strongly think everyone should do for at least a year.

I’ve lived in Irbid and Amman, Jordan; Washington, D.C.; Rome, Italy; Erbil, Iraq; Chicago, around Wisconsin, Dubai and now Louisiana. It’s a wide, wild world out there. I’ve been lucky to explore so much of it and I hope that can continue!
